I feel deeply blessed to have met Catherine Edsell. She is an adventurer, conservationist and global expedition leader with over 20 years’ experience in the industry.
Catherine also recognises the importance of grassroots conservation and has worked alongside some of the worlds most pioneering biodiversity scientists in an effort to further our understanding of the natural world. To facilitate the many aspects of her life, Catherine is a PADI Divemaster, and Reef Check trainer, yoga teacher, TEDx Speaker, published author and an ambassador for EHRA supporting endangered desert adapted elephants.
WOW! This is going to be interesting…..
I asked Catherine what she thought adventure was?
I think adventure is, it is about the unknown actually. So for me it’s very much “I don’t know what’s going to happen.” I could frame it as “oh my god that’s really scary and, you know, oh I don’t know, I don’t know what that’s gonna be at all”
OR I could frame it as, “Oh, I’m going on an adventure that could be really adventurous” so I think for me it’s, it’s creating the excitement where instead there could be fear.
I asked Catherine when she started to become adventurous and I love the way she brings it to life in this 3 minute video:
I asked Catherine if she had ever faced any barriers to being adventurous? She explains a bit about the weather and also about being a woman and mum in adventure – super interesting so watch this 4 min clip!
I asked Catherine about her childhood and how that may have inspired her adventurous nature, a really interesting conversation transpired about aspiration versus inspiration…
I asked Catherine what it is she enjoys about being adventurous?
‘For me, it’s about a connection to the earth. It’s about adventure. Adventure takes you out, so you have freedom, but you also have a relationship with nature, that you don’t get if you’re on a five star holiday. If you’re allowed to have the freedom, it enables the exploration which enables the insight that you get from being with very little, having not much around you. It’s just you and the elements and you realise that actually, you are part of this. You’re not separate from it. You don’t experience that when we live in our comfortable houses.
You feel very separate so to be out there you just feel like, you feel enlivened by I mean, walking through rain forests, you just feel the energy of the trees, the deserts you feel the energy and that you’ve got the milky way above you, so it’s just being alive actually – you’re fully alive when you’re on an adventure.’
Finally I asked Catherine if she had any tips for people wanting to become more adventurous?
I think it’s creating that safety around it. I think a lot of it is because of fear of, or there’s just too much going on. And you’ve got to kind of create that you’re gonna be okay – everyone’s gonna be okay. You’ll be fine and it’s giving yourself that gift actually, you know, think about as giving yourself a gift! I bought this jumper, for example because I wanted to feel, bright and warm and cosy and, and it’s that sort of thing. I want to give myself a gift of a wilderness experience or an adventurous experience, because then it will make me feel something.
Adventure is an opportunity; to feel alive to feel connected to feel confident, actually, because you feel you know ‘I did that, I walked for two days through pouring rain and I’m still here and you know and it was actually great and I had a laugh’!
You don’t have to have all the answers you don’t have to be super brave, you just have to do a bit of research (and if you don’t want to do it by yourself do it with somebody who’s already done it before).
No, just allow life to happen and to unfold in front of you.’
WOW what a way to finish the interview….just let life unfold in front of you.
